We have recently received information regarding a suspected rogue builder operating in the area.

Please be vigilant of individuals or companies who cold call offering building, roofing, driveway, or home improvement services. Be particularly cautious if they claim work is urgently required or offer significant discounts for immediate decisions.

If you are approached by anyone who is pressuring you to agree to work, demanding upfront payment, or behaving aggressively when you decline their services, please do not engage and report the matter to police.

If possible, make a note of:

The individual's name and company details.

Any vehicle registration numbers.

A description of the persons involved.

The date, time, and location of the encounter.

Please share this message with friends, family, and neighbours, especially those who may be vulnerable to this type of fraud.

Stay alert and report any suspicious activity.

When dealing with rogue builders, prevention is always better than cure. Here is some practical advice you can share:

Before Hiring a Builder

Get at least three written quotes and be wary of prices that seem too good to be true.

Ask for recommendations from trusted friends, family, or neighbours.

Check online reviews, but do not rely on them alone.

Verify the builder's business address, landline number, and any trade association memberships.

Ask to see examples of previous work and, if possible, speak to former customers.

Ensure they have appropriate insurance.

Before Work Starts

Get a written contract clearly setting out:

The work to be completed.
Timescales.
Payment schedule.
Total cost.

Avoid agreeing to large upfront payments.

Never pay the full amount before the work is completed.

Pay by credit card (even if only for deposit).
